Description

Prunus virginiana (Chokecherry) Seeds

Zone: 2 to 7.

Native to North America.

The chokecherry is a small upright tree or shrub with an oval to irregular crown.

Foliage consists of alternate, oval leaves with a serrated margin, that are 2 1/2 to 4 inches (6 to 10 cm) long. Showy elongated clusters of white flowers are produced in late spring followed by small 3/8 inch (1 cm) red to black fruit in summer. Bark is smooth and grey-brown.

The chokecherry is good for shrub borders, woodland and bird gardens. It also makes a good understory tree. Fruits are attractive to many birds and other wildlife. It does well in full sun or part shade in average, well-drained soils.

Size: Height 20 to 30 ft; Width 15 to 20 ft.
